I purchased my snow machine in December 2005. Having spent the previous 15 years in North Carolina, I wanted the children to experience snow and the thrill of hopefully a white Christmas. Decembers in Alabama rarely get cold enough for snow but there are some cold days in January and February. In both 2006 and 2007, the weather got cold enough for me to attempt snow making but the humidity was still too high so mainly we had slush. However, the day did come.  The weather was predicted to be in the low 20’s with low humidity on December 31st but then as the

day neared it became apparent the temperature would not get as low as predicted but then there was a change and the weather was approaching just right as night fell on Wednesday, January 2nd. Starting around 10:00 PM I began covering the ground with a snow-like slush and then nearing 2:00 AM the wet bulb dropped below 22 degrees and snow, just like that on the ski slopes in North Carolina, starting forming mounds in the front yard. I continued moving the machine around and blowing snow until around 9:00 AM on Thursday, January 3, 2008. The total snow in the front yard was close to 10 inches.

Not only did our kids have a blast enjoying the snow but many local neighborhood children, school friends and families from church came over to make snowmen and throw snow balls. For many children it was the first time they had ever touched snow. It was the first time since December 1973 that the children’s granddaddy had been in this much snow. He came over and threw some snowballs with the kids. The local newspaper (The Dothan Eagle) had a front page picture of the two boys wrestling in the snow, the local ABC affiliate (WDHN) filmed the kids playing and did a short segment during their nightly news and the local magazine (Dothan Magazine) featured a short article and picture in their March/April 2008 issue.

The weather cooperated and the kids were able to enjoy the snow from Thursday until Sunday afternoon when the last of it melted. It was good timing as they had to start back to school on Monday but they sure did have stories to tell. We only wish there would have been another snow making evening for us in Dothan, Alabama in 2008. However, we (and the neighbors) are looking forward with anticipation to next winter. We expect a bigger crowd of friends and neighbors and we could not be more thrilled to share the experience with them.
